Vintage styles for Mother of the bride

The vintage wedding phenominun is taking the UK by storm, and in my store we are thrilled that our designers are now starting to take up the mantle for our Mother of the Bride/Groom customers.

Vintage is a very broad term and means something unique to each of us, which of course is exactly the point, a vintage wedding can be anything from 1920's inspired flapper dresses, a country style theme or very popular this Jubilee year; 1950's retro chic. To me personally it conjours up soft lace and feminine styling but for my Cousins wedding this year we were all in fab 40's frocks which was great fun.

Because of the diversity of vintage styling we tend to find the age fifty plus Mother of the Bride/Groom customers are often completely at a loss as to what the Bride's "Vintage" brief means. So we try to find out a little more regarding the style of wedding and advise accordingly. One thing for sure, it is very hard to make a modern ruched taffetta dress with bolero fit the bill. Designers for a while would just add a bit of lace to the standard shape or make it in a flower print to bring out the chintz. The main  problem being the jux position of modern shape and fabric with aged antique print just didn't work.

Finally we are now finding designers who are starting with a fresh sketch book and making sure that a mature figure will suit a nipped waist and A-line skirt. It doesn't all have to be about beaded lace (although beautiful) 1950's tailoring was equisite and extremely flattering.

We also advise that it doesn't all have to be about the dress. If you find a very simple outfit you love, you can jazz it up in all sorts of ways. For a winter wedding add a fur shrug and broach, some lovely leather wrist gloves, with some rounded toe court shoes. Or for a summer wedding a soft chiffon or lace bolero instead of fomal jacket, a fascinator with a veil. Add your stamp of indivuality, it does not have to be a pastiche of the era but just one element you love; a hairstyle for example.

Whatever the look have fun with it, give a nod to days gone by and enjoy the experience.
